We really appreciate the local community response to the bicycle collection that took place last Saturday, it was certainly beyond our expectations! Unfortunately, we are not able to collect bicycles throughout the year, as we do not have any storage space available to us. We are sorry to say, but we cannot take anymore bikes - but urge you, if you have a bike you are looking to get rid of, contact the Peterborough Community Bike Shop - located in the basement of The Third Space, Wednesdays or Saturdays.

Aside from that, Ride for Africycler, David Bruuks, made a nice DIY camera mount for his bike last night and filmed this.

Thank you to everyone who helped out with yesterdays bicycle collection. At the end of it all, we had amassed over 200 bicycles and managed to raise a few hundred dollars as well. We would like to extend further thanks to the Peterborough Community Bike Shop, The Third Space and The Hippy Chippy. Your support is greatly appreciated. We managed to shoot some video and photos throughout the day which will be making their way to this space soon enough.

In the meantime, follow this link and check out some photos on The Peterborough Examiner’s website.

Saturday July 12th. 9am - 3pm in the parking lot of The Third Space (map).

Donate your used or unwanted bicycles, regardless of what condition they are in.

Your old, lonely bicycle, has the capacity to build up a community, create jobs, bring hope to families and households, educate and feed young children, and provide clean drinking water in Malawi, Africa. Please consider donating a Bicycle this Saturday.

Donated bikes will make their way to Malawi, Africa, where they will be refurbished in the Africycle Bike Shop and then sold at a low cost within the local market. Your donated bicycle will make the following possible: First, it will create an affordable solution to someone in need of a bicycle. Bicycles have multiple uses in Malawi and can make a great change within a household. Unfortunately, with the high cost (and at times, low quality) of bicycles in the local marketplace, bicycles are not always accessible.

Second, The profit from the sale of your donated bicycle supports the bike shop itself and continued employment of the local Malawians who work there. In addition, this profit also supports a newly constructed school for orphaned and disabled children and will help Africycle in their creation of a clean water program.

If you do not have a bicycle to donate, but would still like to contribute, we ask that you consider making a financial donation to Africycle by clicking on the “Click to Donate” link found on the right side of your screen.

Ted Webb emerged from the sidelines on a bicycle, conjuring cheers from the audience. Mayor Bob Shepherd offered the crowd, now about 1,000 strong, some background into Mr. Webb’s ‘Africycle’ project and how he is benefitting youth here and overseas with his work.

Mr. Webb was handed a plaque from the Times-Journal but MPP O’Toole and MP Bev Oda, who was also on hand, made a surprise presentation to the 22-year-old entrepreneur and volunteer. Both politicians commended Mr. Webb on his ongoing project to ship bicycles overseas for use by residents of Malawi, handing him commendations from Ontario and Canada to add to his collection of awards for the evening”.

Friends… updates have been few and far between. Rest assured, as we get closer to our departure date there will be much more news to share with you. Up first, we a couple of new additions to the crew; Jozina Vander Klok is now on board as well as Michael Vyn. Welcome!

Also, we are currently working out details on a bicycle collection day to happen on July 12th at the The Third Space. We did this last year and ended up with (roughly) 200 donated bicycles. It was a tremendous help for Africycle. Watch this space (and your local media affiliate) for more details regarding this year’s collection. In the meantime, we suggest you take a trip to your garage, basement, shed, yard, or storage facility, in search of those old neglected bicycles you really don’t need anymore. Find them, and make a difference by sending them to Malawi via Africycle.

Stay Posted.
